The paintings below, created over the past two years, are inspired by personal outings in the Alaska backcountry. The collection title describes both the awe and serenity we feel standing before Alaska’s mountains while also hinting at the “storm” of a challenge that lies ahead as we prepare to climb them.

Recreating the work of skilled painters is an excellent way to learn. It’s also fun and can feel like treat in that it reduces decision making as we paint. Color, value, and composition are already there, so, we can focus on deciphering how the more experienced painter applied their technique. I enjoy studying the work of early Alaska painters Sydney Laurence and Eustace Ziegler. I’ve gained much ground on painting an atmospheric Denali by studying these two. Master studies can be shared and shown as long as they are clearly identified as studies and not originals. They can also be sold if, again, clearly identified as a study, and their copyright has expired (generally works published 95 or more years ago or if 70 years have passed since the artist’s death) putting them into public domain.
