Alaska Artist-in-Residence Programs

Alaska Artist-in-Residence (AIR) programs offer a focused time to create while immersed in unique and often remote settings. As an absolute Denali fiend myself, the highly competitive Denali National Park residency program is high on my list of dreams, though the program is suspended while the road is under repair at Polychrome Pass. I think the sleeper option here may be the Forest Service! They offer a selection of stunning host locations for 2026 that few Alaskans have heard of let alone visited.

Most programs offer rustic living quarters, last 1-2 weeks, require the donation of an artwork and include a community outreach component. Here are more details on the Alaska AIR programs on my radar:

Confirmed Active for 2026

  • Link: Alaska Sate Parks 2026 Artist-in-Residence Program
  • Duration: 5 days
  • Application window: October 1-October 31, 2025
  • Residency window: Generally June and after, unless cabin is available earlier
  • Lodging: Public use cabin of your choice, most are BYO wood heat, no electricity
  • Bonus! Dogs are allowed in public use cabins, so, I’m guessing you can bring your dog on this one.

  • Duration: 14 days
  • Application window: TBD, closed on April 11th last year
  • Residency window: June 12-26, 2026
  • Lodging: Cabin, wood heat, no electricity
  • Link: Voices of the Wilderness Artist-in-Residence Program
  • Duration: 7-20 days
  • Application window: Due March 1st, 2026
  • Residency window: June-august
  • Lodging: Varies
  • This may be the coolest option! Locations hosting artists in 2026 are Kootznoowoo, Nellie-Juan-College Fiord, South Baranof, West-Chichagof-Yakobi, Stikine LeConte, Tracy Arm-Ford’s Terror Wilderness, Galcier Bay, and Aleutian Islands.

  • Duration: 1-6 weeks
  • Application window: September 1-December 15
  • Residency window: May 16-September 26
  • Lodging: Cabin
  • Chulitna Lodge offers a few different residency options.

  • Bunnell AIR participants are already scheduled for 2026, but they will be accepting applications for 2027 and 2028 later this year.

Activity Suspended or Unclear for 2026

  • Duration: 7-10 days
  • Application window: Not posted for 2026, was March 28th for 2025
  • Residency window: June-September
  • Lodging: BLM facilities, field station
  • The BLM AIR link above indicates four locations – Dalton Highway/Toolik Field Station, Fortymile/Eagle Area, Pinnell Mountain, and White Mountains. Only Dalton Highway shows recent evidence of accepting applications in 2025.

A favorite public use cabin of mine located in Denali State Park that would make an excellent AIR setting.
